- Aumale, Henri-Eugène-Philippe-Louis d'Orléans, duke d'
(1822-1897)
soldier, writer, royal figure Born in Paris, the fourth son of louis-philippe and Marie-Amélie, Henri the duke d'Aumale joined the military and took part in the Algerian campaign of 1843. He was named governor of Algeria in 1847, but after the revolution of 1848, resigned his post and went to England. There, he dedicated himself to historical research and writing (Histoire des princes de Condé, 1869) and publishing pamphlets against the second empire and napoléon hi. After the beginning of the franco-prussian war in 1870, he offered his services to France but was rejected. He returned nonetheless in 1871 and was elected to the National Assembly. Rejoining the army, he presided over the tribunal that condemned Marshal François bazaine. The duke d'Aumale later was part of the monarchist faction that forced the resignation of louis adolphe thiers in 1873. In 1883, he served as inspector general of the army but was proscribed by the decree of 1886. Author of a work, Instructions militaries de la France (1868), he left much of his property to the institut and the Museum of Chantilly. The duke d'Aumale was elected to the Académie Française in 1871.
